As we enjoy the warm embrace of summer, making sure our canine companions have a happy and healthy season becomes a priority. Rae Shlah, the veterinarian assistant at the Canine Companion Clinic gave five tips to keep your puppy healthy this summer.
Tip 1: Stay hydrated
Whether going for a walk in the park or spending time in the backyard, bring a water bottle and serve your furry friends a refreshing drink when needed.
Tip 2: Protect the Paws
Protect their sensitive paws by scheduling walks during cooler hours or investing in protective boots that protect their feet from the heat.
Tip 3: Choose a cool place to avoid heatstroke
Avoid exercising during the hottest hours, and watch for signs of heat stroke, such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy.
Tip 4: Don’t forget to deworm
Summer can also bring a surge in flea and tick activity, posing a threat to your dog’s health. Check for signs of these pests during grooming.
Tip 5: Never leave your dog in a parked car
The truth is, even when it’s not sweltering outside, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to dangerous levels within minutes. Leaving your dog in an unattended vehicle can cause heat stroke, which can be life-threatening.

Canine Companion Clinic Introduction
Located in Downtown Calgary, Canada, the Canine Companion Clinic (CCC) specializes in providing care for our beloved canine friends. Founded by Drs. Lorraine Westermann and Daniela McLean.
At the Clinic, love for animals is beyond words. The Veterinarian Assistant Rea Shlah shared a memorable story, “A homeless man came into the clinic with his loyal dog, who had been his faithful companion for over 10 years on the streets. With tears in his eyes, he explained that he had recently found a home but had limited resources. His dog had a concerning lump, and he only had $100 to spare. We couldn’t stand by and watch them suffer, so we conducted a full exam and X-rays, only to discover that the dog had aggressive cancer,” Shlah added, “Together we can ensure that every furry friend receives the love, attention and first-class care they deserve. “
CCC is a team of passionate and skilled veterinary professionals to the well-being of each four-legged visitor. Hear what one satisfied local had to say, “The staff here really care about the animals! When my puppy, Max, fell ill, they provided great care and support throughout his treatment. I feel like Max is getting the best care possible,” said Ava Gray.
It is more than a veterinary clinic, it’s a place of love, compassion and expertise for our cherished canine companions. With a dedicated team of professionals and personalized care, the clinic has become a gem in Calgary, ensuring every tail wag gets the care it deserves.
